Seamlessly Sweeping and Widely Tunable<\/h2>\n

Chilas has developed a compact narrow linewidth<\/strong> widely tunable laser module<\/strong> based on their hybrid-integration external cavity laser (ECL)<\/strong> technology. This new laser<\/strong> is perfectly suited for a large range of sensing applications like structural health monitoring using Fibre Bragg gratings<\/strong>, molecular detection using ring resonators, and LiDAR remote sensing.<\/p>\n

Key Features of the Tunable Laser Module<\/h3>\n

Featuring a fibre output power<\/strong> exceeding 10 mW<\/strong>, this laser<\/strong> is capable of sweeping across the entire C-band (1528-1568 nm) at an impressive speed of 40 nm per second<\/strong>. While the laser<\/strong> currently operates in a static mode, a dedicated laser driver<\/strong> and improved calibration procedures allow for quasi-continuous sweeping across the full tuning range.<\/p>\n

A key feature of this laser<\/strong> is its ultra-fine wavelength grid<\/strong> of 4 pm<\/strong>, which ensures precise coverage of all wavelengths within its range. The laser<\/strong> is designed to sweep without mode hops over each 0.2 nm<\/strong> segment, with only a brief 1 millisecond<\/strong> pause as it transitions to the next segment.<\/p>\n

The laser<\/strong>\u2019s innovation lies in its fully chip-based wavelength filter<\/strong>, a design that eliminates the need for mechanical moving parts. This design offers significant advantages:<\/p>\n

  1. Instantaneous Range Reset:<\/strong> The laser<\/strong> can switch from the end of its scan range back to the start without any delay, resulting in a nearly 100% duty cycle<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
  2. Consistency & Repeatability:<\/strong> The consistency from scan to scan is excellent, and the laser<\/strong> is ready for high-volume demands.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Compact Design Meets User-Friendly Interface<\/h2>\n

    Despite its advanced capabilities, this laser module<\/strong> is incredibly compact, housed in a unit measuring just 100x60x20 mm<\/strong>. It features an extended-cavity diode laser<\/strong> and includes all necessary electronic drivers. The module is equipped with a DB9 connector<\/strong>, and a USB interface<\/strong> can be supplied on request. Plus, the included software makes it easy to control and adapt the laser<\/strong> to specific needs.<\/p>\n

    Expanding the Laser\u2019s Impact Across Industries<\/h2>\n

    The versatility of this laser module<\/strong> makes it suitable for a large range of sensing applications like structural health monitoring using Fibre Bragg gratings<\/strong>, optical fibre lasers<\/strong> inspection for both active and passive components, Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)<\/strong>, and Terahertz generation<\/strong>, beating the swept source laser<\/strong> with an idle laser<\/strong> 5 THz sweep range<\/strong> to be anticipated.<\/p>\n

    Expanding the Laser\u2019s Potential to New Wavelengths<\/h2>\n

    As Chilas continues to refine the sweep mode, plans are in place to adapt this technology to other extended cavity lasers<\/strong>, expanding its reach to additional wavelength ranges such as the SCL band<\/strong> and 1700 nm<\/strong>.
